William's Vision

I am legally blind. I could see pretty well into my forties then I started having a series of blood clots form in my retinal veins. This has destroyed the nacular regions of the eye itself leaving me with no light perception in the left eye and only a tiny area of peripheral vision in the right eye.

I can see some light and shadow with the right eye but for the most part I have a constantly moving cloud of colors in my view.

This is neither normal vision, nor is it blackness.

It is a visual hallucination.

My visual cortex, at the back of the brain, is now starved of visual input from my eyes, so it makes random stuff up. The colorful cloud, sometimes it might spark off white catherine wheels flying around other times magnesium bright white flashes. These can happen at anytime day or night. In no way can I say that I see only black or nothing.

I will add that no two blind people will describe their condition in exactly the same way. One thing that I have learned since losing my sight is that blindness is very individual in its manifestation.
