In the past, early burial was common because medical practice lacked proper knowledge. One such incident that occurred in Woodstock, Canada in the 1800s was the case of Collins , a girl who was buried alive.
Above is a picture of Collins' body when it was removed two days after his funeral.
The incident took place in Woodstock, Canada in the 1800s where the girl (Collins) who was declared dead was buried. His body will be removed after two days so he can be buried elsewhere.
After his body was exhumed, people were shocked to see what they saw. Her knees are up to her chin (pictured), her arms are twisted behind her head, there are scratch marks on the inside of the coffin and the shroud is torn to pieces. This clearly indicates that he was alive (in a coma) at the time of burial which was unrecognizable by medical professionals at the time.
We can only assume how much terror he felt the moment he woke up from the so-called coma. This is just one case -- there have been so many cases of people being buried alive in the past that they specialize in safety caskets.
There are other coffins designed with bells, emergency airflow valves and with flags .
Death in such cases was actually caused by dehydration, hypothermia and starvation.
However, early burial was also a punishment in the past. People convicted of heinous crimes would be buried alive until they choked to death.
There are intentional and unintentional early burials .
But the scariest part is what happened to Collins: imagine a little girl trapped inside with no one -- what will happen to her, what she will feel, what she will go through -- she has to die several times before she actually... really dead.
May his soul rest in peace.
