Rosalía earns her second No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart as Motomami, her third studio album, blasts in at No. 1 on the April 2-dated ranking, debuting with the largest week of 2022 for a Latin pop album and the best opening week among all album debuts so far.
The 16-track set, including the spoken interlude “Abcdefg,” is a follow up to her No. 1 effort El Mal Querer (2018), which gifted the Spaniard her first champ on any Billboard ranking and her first entry and top 10 on Top Latin Albums (No. 10 high).
Largest week for a Latin pop album in 2022: Motomami was released March 18 via Columbia Records. It opens with 17,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. after its first tracking week ending in March 24, according to Luminate, formerly MRC Data. That’s by far the largest week of the year for a Latin pop album by units earned, surpassing the overpowering Ones by Selena, which earned 10,000 units in the week ending Jan. 1. It concurrently boasts the largest week among all Latin pop albums that have debuted in 2022, besting Jay Wheeler’s El Amor y Yo (5,000 units, chart dated Feb. 26) and Sebastian Yatra’s Dharma (4,000 units, Feb. 12 dated survey).
The Latin Pop Albums chart ranks the most popular Latin pop albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by MRC Data. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.
Of Motomami’s 17,000 equivalent album units, SEA comprise 14,000 thousand units (equaling 19.37 million on-demand streams from the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 2,300, while TEA comprise 250 units.
Best opening week among all 2022 Latin album debuts: Among Latin albums that have debuted on the 2022-dated charts, Motomami boasts the best opening week in terms of units despite its No. 3 start on Top Latin Albums, ahead of Bad Bunny’s Anniversary Trilogy, the six-LP vinyl-only box set, which bowed at No. 1 with 14,000 units in its opening week (Jan. 15-dated recap) and Junior H’s Mi Vida En Un Cigarro 2, a No. 4 start with 9,000 unites (Feb. 26-dated tally).
Second-biggest streaming week by a woman in over a year: In terms of streams, Motomami debuts with 14,000 SEA units – totaling 19.37 million on-demand streams from the set’s 16 tracks. That’s the second-largest streaming debut by a female act since Karol G’s KG0516 arrived with 19,000 SEA units (equaling 27.4 million on-demand streams of the set’s songs).
As previously mentioned, Motomami bows at No. 3 on the all-Latin genre Top Latin Albums tally. It bests her previous No. 10 debut and peaked set El Mal Querer (Nov. 2018). The set concurrently grants Rosalía her first appearance on the all-genre Billboard 200 as it starts at No. 33; the highest start for a Latin album since Anuel’s Las Leyendas Nunca Mueren opened at No. 30 on Dec. 2021.
Motomami was ushered in by four singles on the all-metric Hot Latin Songs chart: “La Fama,” with The Weeknd, No. 2 debut and peak (Nov. 2021), “Saoko,” No. 22 debut and peak (chart dated Feb. 19), and “Candy” and “Chicken Teriyaki” which debuts at No. 17 and re-enters at No. 20, respectively, on the current ranking.
