Most people know about Panama because of its famous Panama Canal, the world's most important trade route. Especially now that President Trump is talking about taking the Canal back for the U.S. If you didn't know about Panama before, chances are you do now! In this video I visit Panama City, Portobelo in Colon, Isla Grande, the River Chagres, and explore this Central American country I didn't know much about either before visiting. After spending time there, I've come to realise that Panama is so much more than just its famous canal, it's a country with a rich historical heritage, from the thousand years old indigenous tribes who migrated to Panama from Colombia, to the Spanish colonial period and the American construction of the canal. Many people emigrated to Panama from other parts of the world including from the West Indies, China and Europe to work on the railroad and canal, and they've in turn shaped Panamanian culture and identity. Panama has beautiful landscapes, as it’s an isthmus, from the Pacific Ocean side to the Atlantic side and Caribbean sea, lush mountains, rainforests and rivers, and vibrant cultural cities. The food, music, people and traditions of Panama are layered and interesting. Sure the Panama canal is very impressive and amazing to see, but the vibrant culture and natural beauty of this country is reason alone to visit!
