MODERN NAIROBI

We get to know the many faces of modern Nairobi, Kenya — a complex and beautiful city of 5 million and growing. The economic powerhouse of East Africa, it’s still a place of blatant inequality and the friction that comes with it. But Nairobi isn’t just its struggles. It’s a cosmopolitan hub with all the perks you’d find in any major international city. And it's an exciting hub of unique culture and energy. In this video, we shop at Toi Market and learn more about mtumba — imported secondhand clothing ubiquitous in Kenya. We take a matatu, privately owned buses that are Nairobi's biggest form of urban transport, and a major quirk of the city. We visit Kibera, one of the largest slums in East Africa, and witness the resilience and struggle that exists there. We go to a Prince Indah concert. Eat in Nairobi Chinatown and learn how Chinese development is transforming the city. Try traditional Kenyan food. And go to Gondwana, a party emblematic of posh, international Nairobi. We did it all! And we're so excited to share it with you.
