I Drove in the World's Most Expensive Road Trip W/ Adekunle Gold

The Gumball 3000 rally represents the pinnacle of international supercar culture, spanning 3,000 miles from Istanbul, Turkey, to Ibiza, Spain, over the course of seven intense days. Content creator Shank Comics joined forces with Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold, also known as "Big Fish," to navigate six different countries while documenting the highs and lows of life on the open road. The journey began with a logistical pivot, as the team had to fly from Istanbul to Romania to accommodate Adekunle Gold’s performance schedule before officially beginning their driving stint. Early hurdles in Romania ranged from the search for familiar spicy food, colloquially referred to as "Peppe," to the cultural adjustment of trying local lamb chops for the first time. Shank’s initial observations included the demographic rarity of seeing other Black people in certain regions, an experience that followed them through several European stops.

Driving dynamics became a point of contention and humor as the duo adjusted to vehicles with steering wheels on the opposite side than what they were used to in Nigeria. While Shank navigated the maps, he frequently questioned Adekunle Gold’s high-speed driving, which at one point reached 165 km/h, leading to concerns about the "breeze" and the stability of the car. The psychological pressure of the trip peaked at the Serbian border, where a momentary panic ensued when passports appeared to be missing. Upon entering Serbia, the team noted a palpable sense of being outsiders, with Shank describing "quadruple takes" and weird looks from locals while they explored the city or went shopping. Despite these social tensions, the rally offered exclusive access to automotive landmarks, such as the Rimac factory, where the group viewed the world’s fastest electric cars capable of reversing at 250 km/h.

Endurance became the primary theme as the trip progressed toward Italy, requiring grueling 11-hour driving sessions that pushed the team to their physical limits. In Florence, the group faced hospitality friction at their hotel regarding unexpected deposits, though the frustration was eventually mitigated by the "Star Wars" aesthetic of their futuristic rooms and panoramic views of the romantic city. During this leg, Adekunle Gold temporarily departed for Paris to attend the Ballon d'Or, an opportunity he claimed was impossible to decline despite the break in the rally's momentum. Upon his return, the mission shifted toward the final destination in Spain, with the team driving five hours to Valencia before preparing for a ferry crossing to the island of Ibiza.

The final stretch of the journey was marked by moments of reflection and musical spontaneity as the duo traveled by ferry across the Mediterranean. During the ride, Adekunle Gold performed an impromptu acapella session, singing about the struggles of the road and his desire to do better than previous generations. He also took the opportunity to introduce his upcoming project, explaining that his sound is deeply rooted in "Fuji," the Lagos-born soundtrack of his life. Arriving in Ibiza signaled the completion of an eight-country odyssey that Shank described as a "crazy experience" he had dreamed of for years. Ultimately, the 3,000-mile trek served as both a test of friendship and a high-stakes cultural exchange, proving that the world's most expensive road trip is as much about the endurance of the travelers as it is about the speed of the cars.
