Tom Welling Reveals Plans for Smallville Animated Series

Clark Kent actor Tom Welling recently revealed additional information about the impending Smallville animated series. Screen Rant was the first to break the news of the upgrade. Welling shared his hopes for the film with co-star and Lois Lane actress Erica Durance at Fan Expo Vancouver. The majority of his remarks focused on his desire for the original show's cast to return for the animated version.

When asked about his desire for the cast to return, Welling stated, "We're working on an animated series that will continue up directly after Smallville [season 10], telling our own tale, and our ambition is to get Erica... Allison [Mack] may be difficult to acquire... But Sam Jones III and Lionel Luthor will also play important roles. We've previously talked about it with John Glover. We already have animation; we just don't have stories since Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] are busy making Tim Burton-style films."

Welling continued, "We'll do this as soon as they're finished with that. I want to be Clark's voice, and Erica wants to be Lois' voice; that will be the joy of it. I believe Al and Miles will present a unique and novel story and refer to it as a Multiverse phenomenon. But let's see where it goes; it'll be entertaining."

Many of the actors, including Welling, Durance, and Sam Jones III, have expressed interest in appearing in the project. Allison Mack is unlikely to return to the Smallville universe due to her claimed leadership position in the NXIVM cult.

Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum stated their desire for a Smallville animated series back in May. Smallville centered on Superman when he was younger. The live-action series premiered in 2001 and lasted ten seasons. An animated sequel series would not be the first time fans have seen the characters since the end of the first show. Smallville: Season 11 was released as a comic book in 2012, one year after the final episode. In addition, Welling and Durance reprised their roles in the Crisis on Infinite Earths television crossover. Clark Kent and Lois Lane were revealed to have married and started a family in the special. Another revelation was that Kent had given up his abilities in order to be closer to his loved ones. It's unclear whether Welling would obtain his abilities in an animated show.
