Zoë Kravitz says she 'interpreted' Catwoman as bisexual in 'The Batman'

Selina Kyle/Catwoman is frequently represented as bisexual in comics, but the character's LGBTQ sexuality has never been explored on the big screen, despite appearances by Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway. Zoe Kravitz is the latest actress to play Catwoman, appearing in "The Batman" with Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne. Kravitz recently told Australia's Pedestrian that her Catwoman in the film was viewed as bisexual.

Selina Kyle visits her apartment in search of her companion Anika in one scene from "The Batman." Selina refers to Anika as her "baby," a fairly ambiguous term that leaves up the idea that their relationship is more than platonic.

When asked by Pedestrian if this scene was meant to spotlight Selina’s bisexuality, Kravitz answered, “That’s definitely the way I interpreted that, that they had some kind of romantic relationship.” She then said “I agree” after the reporter expressed happiness over a film finally portraying Catwoman as bisexual.

The film's director, Matt Reeves, told Pedestrian the film is "very true to the character of Selina Kyle."

"She isn't quite Catwoman, but she has all the components in place to become Catwoman." "He stated. "And, in terms of her relationship with Anika, I spoke with Zo early on, and one of the things she said that I loved was, 'She's drawn to strays because she was a stray, and so she really wants to care for these strays because she doesn't want to be that way anymore, and Anika is like a stray and she loves her.'

"So I don't think we meant to go exactly in that direction," Reeves added, "but you can certainly take it that way." She has a closeness with that role, and it's a wonderful and deep caring for that character, more than a sexual thing, but there was supposed to be a really intimate interaction between them."

"The Batman" will be released in theaters across the country on March 4.
