Theirry Henry slammed Liverpool for continuing to play a high line during their 3-3 draw against Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The legendary striker warned ‘you can’t play like that against Villarreal’ and also added ‘you don’t want to see that’, as he told CBS Sports (13/04/22 at 10:35 pm).
Apart from Joel Matip, it was a much-changed Liverpool backline against Benfica, with Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Konstantinos Tsimikas all coming in.
Even though the Reds had that two-goal cushion going into this game, Benfica just wouldn’t stop coming at them, even when the home team put three on the board themselves.
Nonetheless, Henry seemingly wasn’t happy with how Liverpool were going about things, as he warned to ‘be careful’.
“Jamie (Carragher) I know you’re not too happy about that, the high line at 3-1,” said Henry. “You can’t play like that against Villarreal.
“You can’t do those mistakes. I mean the job was done. But you don’t want to see that.
“As a coach, I am sure Klopp will address that and we know it won’t be the same back four against Villarreal.
“But that’s twice. Losing against Inter. Briefly against Benfica. But they are through. Although, be careful.”
Liverpool aren’t going to stop deploying such tactics because the results are there for all to see.
They are still in every competition and, as things stand, they have a chance to add multiple trophies to their cabinet.
That high line was used against Manchester City on Sunday, which apart from the first half, worked a treat for Klopp.
And the same will be used when the duo lock horns again in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley on Saturday.
