According to a recent update, the next major version of Windows 11 will be known as Windows 11 22H2.
While many of us expected this to be the name, according to Microsoft's historical naming traditions for its Windows operating system, this is the first time the big upgrade has been formally referred to as Windows 11 22H2.
Previously, this major feature upgrade for Windows 11 was known as "Sun Valley 2." According to what we've heard about this update, it appears to be one of the most significant updates to Windows 11 yet, introducing some intriguing new capabilities to the operating system, many of which customers have been requesting since the release of Windows 11 last year.
Some of the most exciting changes, such as bringing Android apps to Windows 11, which will allow you to potentially use your favorite smartphone apps on your Windows 11 device, redesigns of iconic apps like Note Pad and Windows Media Player, and new taskbar features, could be game changers for the new operating system, finally convincing people to upgrade from Windows 10.
According to Windows Latest, Microsoft refers to 'Windows 11, version 22H2' in the release notes for a new Windows update for the first time.
This not only tells us what the official name for the next major upgrade to Windows 11 will be, but it also tells us when this update will be released.
The '22' portion of the name refers to the year in which the update will be released, and the 'H2' part of the name corresponds to the month in which it will be released. So, this practically confirms that the upgrade previously known as Sun Valley 2 will be released in the second half of 2022, somewhere after June.
Windows 11 was released on October 5, 2021, therefore may Microsoft be intending to release Windows 11 22H2 to coincide with the one anniversary of the operating system? That's probably a possibility, as Microsoft did it with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update back in 2016.
