Thousands of African Students Stranded in Ukraine Amid Russian Invasion

Following Russia's invasion of the beleaguered country, thousands of African students are imprisoned and fear for their safety.

Korrine Sky, a 26-year-old second-year medical student in Dnipro, told Insider that she is attempting to communicate with other students in order to escape the fighting.

"I'm terrified," Sky admitted. "We are not receiving assistance from any of the embassies." They've basically said,'save yourselves.

Another Nigerian student, Alexander Somto Orah, told the publication that they have considered fleeing to Poland.

"We're hoping to cross into Poland despite the fact that we don't have an active visa that allows us to do so." "I think we're hoping that Poland would let us take refuge in their nation."

Meanwhile, Orah told Al Jazeera that the students had "no support from any government agencies."

"The school only provided us with a bomb bunker where we could hide when the air raid siren went off," Orah recounted. "The sirens went off and on approximately five times before I left yesterday." There isn't much food. I haven't had access to cash in two days. Every ATM on the road is empty."

Russia initiated what President Vladimir Putin initially described as a "special military operation" in Ukraine earlier this week. Everything you need to know about the Ukraine-Russia scenario may be found here.
