Thierry Henry explains why Chelsea sacking Thomas Tuchel made no sense

Tuchel’s dismissal came on Wednesday morning following a poor start to the season, with Tuesday night’s embarrassing defeat to Dinamo Zagreb the final nail in the coffin.

It has since been reported that Chelsea owner Todd Boehly may have been planning the sacking for a number of weeks, with his relationship with Tuchel, and indeed Tuchel’s relationship with the players, growing ever more tense.

Even so, Henry admitted that the decision has left him baffled for one particular reason.

‘I wasn’t actually surprised given how the game is at the minute,’ the legendary French forward told CBS Sports.

‘What I was surprised about was why do you allow him to bring in all these players and then sack him after?

‘I wasn’t surprised that he was let go because you can’t sack the whole team, sometimes the coach has to go.

‘But you allowed him to bring new people in and then you sack him. That’s what’s weird for me.’

In his first summer in charge of Chelsea, Boehly splashed over £253million, the most the Blues have ever spent in a transfer window, on players, including Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It is unclear how many of these players were signed at Tuchel’s request given that the German preferred the role of head coach rather than manager and generally did not get too involved with the club’s transfer policy.
