Lately, social media giants like TikTok and Instagram are under fire, accused of targeting teens with content that glamorizes suicidal thoughts and self-harm. It seeks to enforce a “duty of care,” letting teens opt out of algorithmic pushes and requiring platforms to undergo audits to protect young users.

But numbers and courts don’t capture the core of the tale. The real tragedy lies in the everyday, where a teen, alone in a moment of pain, encounters a video that nudges them from curiosity to compulsion. In that scroll, there’s no guardian, just a relentless feed pulling, pushing, seducing. Researchers found that disturbing short-form videos recommended to young users carry darker visual features—subtle yet psychologically harmful triggers that blend into the feed unnoticed.
