Over the past four years, Amapiano has emerged as one of the most popular sounds in Nigeria, blending seamlessly with the country’s vibrant Afrobeats. Originally from South Africa, Amapiano’s adoption in Nigeria sparked backlash from some in Southern Africa, with critics labeling it unoriginal. In 2024, however, Nigeria sought to reclaim its pride and reshape its continental narrative. As part of this cultural reset, Rema boldly redefined Afrobeats by introducing a sound entirely distinct from mainstream trends. Though initially met with criticism, his innovative approach quickly gained widespread popularity, becoming a cultural reset for the genre.
