Quentin Tarantino recently appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show and shared his thoughts on the current film era.
Tarantino named Once Upon a Time in Hollywood his best film ever made. He said, “For years people used to ask me stuff like that. And I would say something like, ‘Oh, they’re all my children.’ I really do think ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my best movie.” The 2019 film was Tarantino’s most recent directorial feature and starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. At the time, the film grossed $374 million USD at the global box office and picked up 10 nominations at the 2020 Oscars. Fans may find Tarantino’s belief that Hollywood is his best film to be a surprise, considering his disdain for the modern era of film.
In a recent conversation on his The Video Archives Podcast, NME reported that the director has taken aim at the films made today, as well as those in the 1950s and ’80s. He said,
“Even though the ’80s was the time that I probably saw more movies in my life than ever – at least as far as going out to the movies was concerned – I do feel that ’80s cinema is, along with the ’50s, the worst era in Hollywood history. Matched only by now, matched only by the current era!”
He also added that “the [films] that don’t conform” are “the ones that stand out from the pack” in the current era. Recently, he also told the Los Angeles Times that he would never direct a Marvel criticizing, “You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.”
