Marcos Alonso 'to discuss new Barcelona contract in February'

Barcelona is reportedly willing to hand a contract extension to defender Marcos Alonso. After a drawn-out saga due to Barcelona's financial issues, Alonso finally left Chelsea for Cam Nou towards the back end of the summer transfer window. In order to help meet certain criteria, the Catalan giants insisted on a one-year deal being signed, something which has left Alonso vulnerable to an exit next summer.

Nevertheless, the 32-year-old has emerged as an important squad member of Xavi's squad, even being deployed in the unfamiliar role of center-back. In total, Alonso has made 11 starts and seven substitute appearances for the La Liga leaders, 10 of those outings coming in Spain's top flight.

Alonso has also chipped in with two goals, the most notable coming on New Year's Eve as he netted in the 1-1 draw with neighbors Espanyol. According to Sport, it has now been determined that Alonso will remain as part of the first-team squad in the longer term. The report claims that Xavi has been left pleased with Alonso's performances, while he also offers valuable experience in what is a relatively young squad. Furthermore, it is highlighted that Alonso's willingness to accept lower terms than he was on at Stamford Bridge has also played in his favor.

The alleged development comes when it appears unlikely that Alonso will earn regular game time on the left-hand side of defense due to the emergence of Alejandro Balde. Although the youngster has sometimes featured as a right-back, Jordi Alba is also part of the squad and ahead of Alonso on the left flank. While it remains a possibility that Alba may depart the club ahead of 2023-24, Barcelona are eager to hand a new long-term deal to Balde. Balde has made 14 starts and one substitute outing in La Liga this campaign, while Alba has eight starts and four appearances as a replacement to his name.
