Mama Nike - I started my Gallery in Osogbo in 1967 in my bedroom

“On a random Friday in Lagos, my friend and I found ourselves at Nike Art Gallery, admiring some beautiful paintings, when we unexpectedly bumped into the legend herself Mama Nike, the visionary founder of the gallery. Even without knowing her face, I instantly felt her presence. Dressed in a stunning Adire and a massive pearl necklace, her energy was magnetic, her eyes shining with wisdom and untold stories. She took us on a personal tour, showing us her office and exclusive spaces while sharing incredible stories about her life. Her words were more than inspiring, they were real-life testimonies of a generation that believed in themselves and their culture far more than their own government ever did. They paved the way for Nigerian creatives, making it possible for today’s artists - whether in music, painting, or other forms - to thrive and tell their own stories. It was so powerful, I had to sit down with her and bring her story to you. Her impact is timeless, and her legacy deserves to be documented. It truly felt like I was witnessing history in the making. “
