Fedor Lyass ("Hardcore Henry") coordinated an open letter signed by famous Russian cinematographers against the war in Ukraine.
Roman Vasyanov ("Suicide Squad," "Fury"), Mikhail Krichman ("Loveless," "Leviathan"), Pavel Kapinos ("Hardcore Henry"), Vladislav Opelyants ("Leto," "Petrov's Flu," "Persian Lessons"), and Pavel Fomintsev ("Unclenching the Fists") are among those who have signed the petition.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, Russian animators and filmmakers have valiantly united and spoken out against their government's actions, pleading for worldwide assistance. The signatories have put themselves in jeopardy on both a personal and professional level by doing so.
The following is the complete translated text of the letter, as well as a list of the signatories:
We, the Russian cinematographers, demand an immediate halt to military aggression against Ukraine, an immediate ceasefire, and a withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.
Russia declared war on Ukraine on February 22, 2022. There is no geopolitical justification, no purpose of any type, that would justify killing human life - don't be fooled by propaganda. The publicly declared goals of this "operation" have little to do with reality: people are being killed or forced to evacuate their homes, and they are spending their nights in bomb shelters. What possible justification could there be for that? What could be more important than Kyiv residents learning to distinguish between a Grad and a Smerch rocket based on their sound? Such a goal does not exist.
For decades, the so-called "military operation" would isolate Russia from the rest of the world, remove it from the worldwide cultural scene, and lead to lead to devastating consequences for its economy, and stain us and our children with deserved disgrace. We have not done enough to prevent this war, but we do not want it — and will not let it be waged in our name.
We demand that the war with Ukraine be stopped.
