In this film, curator and researcher Sam Cornish explores the life and work of British abstract artist John Hoyland. From his early beginnings in Sheffield to his exposure to American abstract expressionism in London, Hoyland’s vibrant, large-scale paintings are celebrated for their energy and colour. While working at the Royal College of Art in London in 1994, he produced around 25 ceramic works, which he described as “these mad little hybrids”. John Hoyland: Imaginary Beings focuses on this body of work, bringing together a selection of four sculptures that are shown in conversation with four related paintings.
