I Tried the World’s Hottest Pepper

Acclaimed travel documentarian Joe Hattab embarked on a perilous quest to confront the world’s most potent peppers, chronicling his journey from the natural spice capital of the Caribbean to the clandestine laboratory of an American hybridizer. This high-stakes exploration, documented in his video, revealed the terrifying distinction between an agricultural wonder and a genuine chemical weapon. Hattab’s journey commenced in Trinidad and Tobago, a Caribbean nation rich in cultural diversity—blending Indian, African, European, and Arabic influences—and known for its passionate embrace of heat. Trinidad is famously known for staples like "doubles" (fried bread with curried chickpeas) and the fried shark sandwich, "bacon shark," where hot pepper is a cultural necessity. The team visited the Maruga Farm, the birthplace of the Maruga Scorpion, the hottest natural pepper in the world.

This pepper measures approximately 2 million Scoville units, a heat level determined by the concentration of capsaicin, the compound responsible for the burning sensation. Upon arriving at the humble farm, run by the family that pioneered the pepper, Hattab learned that other countries have been unable to replicate the unique soil required for the Scorpion to flourish. Prior to the main event, Hattab experienced the initial levels of Trinidadian spice, including the "mother-in-law" dish, described as being "hot and not easy," which immediately caused a need for milk and relief. When Joe Hattab finally tasted the Maruga Scorpion, the pain was immediate and rapidly escalated. He described the burn as a "headache," admitting he "lost control" and required yogurt, milk, and lime bits for relief. Despite this intense experience, Hattab survived the natural wonder.

The ultimate challenge, however, lay in America, where Hattab traveled to meet the creator of the reigning world champion, known as "Smoking Ed"—often referred to as the "evil genius". Ed is the inventor of Pepper X, a hybrid pepper created in a lab that reached Guinness World Records with a heat level exceeding 2.6 million Scoville units (with some tests placing it between 2.5 and 3 million), making it officially the strongest hybrid pepper ever recorded in history. This immense heat is five or six times hotter than the Carolina Reaper. The Pepper X farm’s location is kept highly secret to prevent theft, as the seeds are extremely valuable, being the result of 8 to 12 years of challenging genetic work to stabilize the cross. The inventor shared that his initial intent was not to create the world’s hottest pepper, but to study its medicinal properties to potentially help people with cancer and heart disease. Hattab was advised never to eat the pepper on an empty stomach and to chew it thoroughly. When he sampled a piece of the chocolate Pepper X, the consequences were far more severe than the Scorpion. Joe Hattab described the feeling as "like I was dying" and stated he "lost control". The inventor confirmed that the unbearable pain, once started, would not stop for 20 minutes. Joe Hattab concluded that this experience was "way too dangerous".
