Google is getting ready to make it possible for anyone to erase their Android advertising IDs

Spend any length of time on the internet, and someone—even your phone—will create an advertising profile for you.

On Android, Google has long allowed you to reset your advertising ID, but last year it began allowing users on Android 12 to completely delete it. You won't have to use the most recent OS for long. Google will make the same option available to all phones via a Google Play Services upgrade in April of this year.

This option can be found in the Google section of the system settings. You can reset your ID or delete it entirely from the "Ads" sub-menu, which simply replaces it with a string of zeros. That way, anyone can participate anyone targeting ads using Google's tools will no longer see you as a unique individual who loves ankle socks, ceramic clowns, and churros (or whatever you're into). Of course, this will make the ads you see on your device less relevant. Apps that need a unique ID for something other than advertising can still do so with the app set ID.

This will be prohibited in apps aimed at minors. That means no more Google-approved ad targeting of children. We don't have a firm timeframe for this, but like a GMS update, it will most likely be phased in over several weeks. On April 1, permission enforcement for kid-friendly apps will begin. Leaders applied for nonprofit status with the IRS in the summer of 2020, and it was approved in December 2020, allowing the organization to accept tax-deductible donations directly.
