FG approves buses for students, eases restrictions on student loans, others

President Bola Tinubu has given his support for the allocation of vehicles to student unions in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in our country. The directive was contained in a press release by Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to the President. The goal is to reduce the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies on students in high school. The newspaper said the president's aim is to ensure that students can easily access their schools despite the rising cost of transportation. This initiative aims to reduce the burden on students and facilitate their transportation needs. Mr. Alake pointed out that in addition to reducing the transportation burden for students, the provision of buses will reduce parents' and guardians' additional daily travel costs. He assured Nigerians that the President is working hard to ensure that no Nigerian student drops out of school due to lack of funds. He said: “...President Tinubu has ordered the heads of the federal government institutions of higher education to avoid arbitrary increases in fees and, as far as possible, to postpone any further increase so that parents and students would not face it. many difficulties". 

Waiver of Restrictions on Student Loans To fulfill that promise, he authorized the removal of all restrictions on student loans, making them accessible to any student or family in need of financial assistance. In the same vein, he said President Tinubu told the heads of federal government institutions of higher education not to allocate funds wrongly. Money transfer, food distribution According to Mr. Alake, President Tinubu has ordered the distribution of more than 200,000 metric tons to families in 36 states in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. He said this to assure Nigerians that the government is working hard to ensure that disadvantaged students also benefit from the cash transfer and food distribution system. He reiterated that the Federal Government is concerned about the welfare of Nigerian students in these difficult times by supporting education. He concluded that the government wants to meet the needs of teaching and non-academic staff and invest in infrastructure to improve the global competitiveness of higher education institutions.

Mr Alake emphasized that in addition to easing the transportation burden on students, the provision of buses will relieve parents and guardians of the additional cost of daily commuting. He assured Nigerians that the President remains committed to ensuring that no Nigerian student abandons their educational pursuits due to financial constraints. He said, “…President Tinubu has directed the authorities in all Federal Institutions of higher learning to avoid arbitrary increase in sundry fees payable and where possible defer further increase so that parents and students don’t face too many difficulties”.

This move aims to support students and their families in overcoming economic challenges and pursuing their educational goals. He said, “In line with his promise to ensure no Nigerian student abandons his or her educational pursuits as a result of lack of money and economic circumstances of their parents, President Tinubu has also approved the removal of all restrictions on the students’ loan to make it available to any student or household that may desire it”.
