Apple halts sales of products to Russia, restricts access to Russian news apps

According to a company spokeswoman, Apple has ceased all sales of its products in Russia as a result of the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Apple does not have any physical stores in Russia and normally ships its phones, computers and tablets through its online stores, and also sells products through third-party retail stores there.

The company had recently stopped Apple Pay service in Russia after the United States sanctioned Russian banks.

According to Fred Sainz, an Apple spokeswoman, Apple has also banned the apps for Russian state news channels RT and Sputnik to only be visible in Russia, and Apple Maps is no longer showing traffic in Ukraine to assist protect citizens in the nation.

The App Store will continue to function, and Russian users will be able to upgrade their software.

Apple's announcement came shortly after Ukraine's minister for digital transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, wrote on Telegram that Apple had stopped selling its products in Russia, along with a thank-you message to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Apple's move joins a growing number of firms that have distanced themselves from Russia, including Disney, UPS, and FedEx. Following BP's announcement to split from Russian oil giant Rosneft on Monday, oil giant Shell announced Monday that it is exiting all Russian operations. General Motors and Volvo have banned vehicle exports to Russia.
