Aonishiki: The Double.

UKRAINE – In a breathtaking display of power and technical precision, the newly promoted Ozeki Aonishiki has solidified his place at the summit of professional sumo by capturing the New Year’s Tournament title. The victory marks a historic second consecutive championship for the rising star, whose performance in Tokyo has been hailed as a masterclass in resilience. Despite the immense pressure of his new rank and a field of formidable opponents, Aonishiki’s path to the Empress Cup culminated in a dramatic playoff that will likely be remembered as one of the most technical finishes in recent tournament history.

The opening week of the competition saw the Ozeki set a dominant pace, though the road was not without obstacles. After a flawless start, Aonishiki suffered his first setback on Day 4 at the hands of Oho. However, he immediately demonstrated the mental fortitude required of a champion by bouncing back with a decisive victory over the veteran Daieisho. This ability to reset proved crucial as the tournament moved into its second half, where the stakes—and the caliber of opposition—increased significantly.

A pivotal turning point occurred on Day 12, an afternoon steeped in both strategy and tradition. Entering the ring wearing a black mawashi belonging to his master, Aonishiki appeared to channel a new level of focus. On that day, he seized the sole lead of the tournament by defeating his primary rival and fellow co-leader Atamifuji, followed by a monumental win over the Yokozuna Hoshoryu. The momentum briefly wavered on Day 14 following a loss to Yokozuna Onosato, but Aonishiki forced a title-deciding playoff on the final day by overcoming the resilient Kotozakura.

The ensuing playoff against Atamifuji was a high-stakes encounter that brought the Ryogoku Kokugikan to its feet. In a stunning tactical maneuver, Aonishiki secured the win with a rare and spectacular kubinage (headlock throw), sentencng Atamifuji to the dirt and securing the Empress Cup. While the spotlight remained on the champion, the tournament also recognized several other standout performances. Yoshinofuji was honored with his first Outstanding Performance Award, while Kirishima and Atamifuji were both awarded the Fighting Spirit Prize—the third such honor for the latter.

As the dust settles on this New Year’s spectacle, the sumo world now turns its attention to the Kansai region. The elite ranks of the association will reconvene for the upcoming Spring Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday, March 8th, in Osaka. With Aonishiki now chasing a rare third consecutive title, the momentum behind the new Ozeki has reached a fever pitch, setting the stage for what many predict will be a defining year for the sport.
