Zanzibar is an Archipelago in the Indian Ocean and an insular semi-autonomous state. In 1964, it united with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania. It consists of many small islands and two large ones which are Unguja and Pemba Island. On the island of Unguja, the capital can be found: Zanzibar City. The Stone Town, its historic centre, is a World Heritage Site. Tourism, spices and raffia are Zanzibar's main industries and the islands produce black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Therefore, they're sometimes referred to locally as the "Spice Islands".
