Artist Ibrahim Mahama reflects on the ghosts of global movement for Wales Bonner’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection For Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, the repurposed coal sacks at the core of his installation work exist as the vessels of commodities – a shadow of globalization and economic exchange in African markets. Considering the way in which textiles carry memories attached to the movement of goods, and of people, he transcribes the history of bearing names and connections on the body onto fabric, building large-scale tapestries from these interwoven histories.
