The key difference is depigmentation is associated with medical conditions and injuries that affect the skin, causing discoloration in spots or patches. It is the loss of pigment which is when the skin cells fail to produce melanin; melanin is responsible for providing color to the skin. The skin condition can and usually is temporary and can be reversed. Sun is the leading contributor to depigmentation.

Vitiligo is different as it is an autoimmune disorder that completely destroys the melanocyte cells in the body which is responsible for giving the skin color. Vitiligo causes white patches to form over the body usually starting on the hands, forearms, feet, or face. This disorder is permanent and cannot be reversed. Vitiligo is not considered deadly. Experiencing chronic or long-term stressors contribute to inflammation which directly affects autoimmunity, in return triggering Vitiligo. Vitiligo usually initially occurs in adults in their 20s.
Vitiligo can appear on the mucous membranes the lining of the mouth, nose, eyes, inner part of the ears, and genital, or rectal area.

Vitiligo can result in other health issues, such as vision issues, hearing problems, and severe sunburn. People with vitiligo are susceptible to additional autoimmune disease; like thyroid disorders, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and various types of anemia. Vitiligo is not contagious but is usually found in the DNA.
Both vitiligo and depigmentation can have a negative effect on a person self-esteem, confidence, and security. Most blacks who have vitiligo will attempt to even the skin color by applying makeup.
