SAG Awards: The 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

They’ve been a dominant force throughout awards season, but the team behind Everything Everywhere All at Once enjoyed an absolute rout at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, winning in every single category for which they were nominated. With awards for Ke Huy Quan in supporting actor, Jamie Lee Curtis in supporting actress, and Michelle Yeoh in best actress, the film was practically guaranteed as the best ensemble winner— but no one in the room likely predicted that the final moment of the night would belong to the film‘s 94-year-old star James Hong, who gave a long, captivating speech reflecting on his long Hollywood career. The movie wasn’t just the big winner of the night: Everything Everywhere All at Once made history as the first film to ever win three individual SAG Awards as well as best ensemble.

If you somehow needed more proof of how universal loved the film is, that might be it. Brendan Fraser was the lone non EEAAO winner on the film side, taking home the best actor trophy for The Whale. Fraser’s comeback story has been a recurring, emotional thread throughout the season, but he and The Whale seemed to be losing steam after Austin Butler took home the BAFTA last week for Elvis. Fraser’s victory mean the best actor race may be the most difficult Oscar race to predict — except maybe best actress, which thanks to Michelle Yeoh’s win tonight is now officially too close to call.On the television side it was yet another coronation for The White Lotus, which won the trophy for drama ensemble as well as for Jennifer Coolidge. Other major winners included Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sam Elliott (1883), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), and the cast of Abbott Elementary, who are poised to continue their Cinderella run through another Emmy season.
