Paul Pogba: Man Utd midfielder speaks about his experiences of depression

Paul Pogba has admitted to suffering from depression "many times" throughout his career.

Footballers, according to the Manchester United midfielder, find it tough to open up about their mental health issues.

He goes on to say that large pay aren't a barrier, and that the continual scrutiny that athletes face creates an intense environment in which they must operate.

In an interview with French daily Le Figaro, Pogba was asked if he had ever experienced sadness and said, "Absolutely, and countless times throughout my career."

"I've gone through that, but we don't discuss it." Sometimes you don't even realize you're depressed; all you want to do is be isolated and alone; these are definite indications.

From a personal standpoint, it began when I worked for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

"You wonder if there's something wrong with you because you've never experienced anything like this before.

Of sure, we make a lot of money and hardly complain. But that doesn't stop you from encountering times in your life - and the world - that are more challenging than others.

"It is not appropriate in football, but we are not superheroes; we are just ordinary people.

Of course, you'll notice it in your body and mind, and you'll have a month, if not a year, when you're not feeling well. But you can't say it - at least not in public.

"Everything is in your head; the mind governs everything, and all elite athletes experience these moments, but few discuss them.

"After Kylian missed his penalty against Switzerland, no one remembered him, despite the fact that he had suffered a lot of criticism and had horrible things written about him.
