Wearing a grey Nike hoodie and white T-shirt, the 21-year-old confirmed his name, date of birth, and address before his barrister, David Toal, made a bail application.

Greenwood faces three charges:

Attempting to rape a woman on October 22, 2021

Engaging in controlling and coercive behavior between November 1, 2018, and October 15, 2022.

Assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm between December 12 and 31, 2021

Greenwood was arrested on Saturday following an allegation that he breached his bail conditions by contacting the alleged victim. He spent Saturday and Sunday night behind bars, awaiting this morning's court appearance.

Janet Potter, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West, said on Saturday: "The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. "All three counts relate to the same complainant. Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorized the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police. "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice those proceedings."

Greenwood remains suspended by United “pending the outcome of the judicial process.” The club has previously said he is being paid his salary, in the range of £ 75,000 a week, in full during the suspension. His last appearance came in a Premier League win against West Ham United on January 22.
