Hiplife Rewind explores the story of Ghana’s influential music genre through personal accounts of key artists and creatives in the scene. Featuring pioneering icons such as Reggie Rockstone, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, and filmmaker Abraham Ohene–Djan, as well as rich historical archive of Highlife music and Ghanaian life, reporter Akwasi Sarpong leads us through the genre’s early musical and cultural influences. With intimate access to international artists such as M.anifest, KiDi and Kuami Eugene, and Eno Barony, the film explores the trajectory of the music genre and the industry’s playful, ongoing rivalry with Nigeria over who discovered Afrobeats; was it rooted in Ghana? Fused with music from the best of West Africa’s elite today, including multi-award winner Burna Boy, Hiplife Rewind is a visually striking inside story of Hiplife music.
