Euro 2028: UK and Ireland football associations take 'important' Uefa bid step

The football associations of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland have made a joint expression of interest to host the European Championships in 2028.

The five associations had previously discussed hosting the World Cup in 2030 and had performed a £2.8 million feasibility assessment.

However, they opted in February to concentrate their efforts on Euro 2028.

Despite being barred from international football, Russia has expressed interest in hosting the tournament.

Fifa and Uefa, the world and European football governing organizations, have suspended Russian clubs and national teams as a result of the country's invasion of Ukraine, awaiting the outcome of an appeal by the Football Union of Russia to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Despite the restriction, the union's executive committee has endorsed a candidacy for the 2028 and 2032 European Championships.

Turkey's football federation has informed Uefa that it has submitted its own expression of interest.

The bids for 2028 and 2032 were confirmed by Uefa shortly after the deadline for declarations of interest passed at 17:00 GMT.

The UK and Ireland, Russia, and Turkey have all indicated interest in hosting the 2028 tournament, while Russia, Turkey, and Italy have expressed interest in hosting the 2032 tournament.

Euro 2028, according to the UK and Republic of Ireland associations, "would be one of the biggest sporting events ever staged in the UK and Ireland."

The FAs of England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales announced in a single statement that submitting

"The governments of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales have reiterated their support for the expression of interest submission, while authorities in Northern Ireland continue to closely monitor the process, given that the Northern Ireland Executive is currently not meeting formally."

"This unprecedented cooperation of five associations brings something unique to European football, including the possibility of a larger tournament, and we are committed to ensuring the long-term viability and lasting benefits for communities across the UK and Ireland."

The joint bid team will now await Uefa's technical specifications for bidding for the event, after which it plans to meet with possible host towns and stadiums.
