Emir's Palace Kano, Nigeria

'From the pit to the Palace', we uncover some of the regal magic of Kano, Northern Nigeria. For over 500 years the multi-generation dyers of the Kofar Mata have plunged cloth into indigo pits, creating blue fabrics traded across the Sahara and Arab lands. Onto the Emir’s Palace, from where Muhammadu Sanusi II commands the ancient city-state of Kano. Despite the recent ‘game of thrones’ with his cousin, Aminu Ado Bayero, the Palace still provides a glimpse into Kano’s golden past over the centuries and bright future to come. Kano’s Museum sheds more light on its history, with its golf course and racecourse showing the crumbling remnants of the British Empire.- Will Ashbee
