ChatGPT Comes Under Investigation by Federal Trade Commission

Continuing with the government's work, the FTC is investigating whether artificial intelligence has harmed people by posting false information that puts names and personal data at risk, the Washington Post reported Thursday.   The reported move poses a major regulatory threat to the Microsoft-backed start-up, which has launched an innovative intellectual property, attracting consumers and businesses and raising concerns about its risks. The FTC this week sent a request for 20 pages of records about how OpenAI describes the risks in its AI model, the Post said, citing documents. The agency is investigating whether the company engaged in unfair or fraudulent practices that damaged the reputation of consumers, the newspaper added. The FTC and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.   As the race to develop powerful AI services heats up, research into technologies that could disrupt the way society and business are becoming more intense.

F.T.C. Is Investigating ChatGPT Maker - The New York Times

Global regulators are seeking to enforce existing laws covering everything from copyright and data privacy to two key issues: the data stored in the forms and content they produce, Reuters reported in May. In the United States, a member of the Senate Chuck Schumer has called for a "comprehensive law" to improve security and AI and will accept the session later this year. In March, OpenAI ran into trouble in Italy, where the regulator took ChatGPT offline following allegations that OpenAI violated the European Union's GDPR - a privacy policy introduced in 2018.   ChatGPT was eventually reinstated after the US company agreed to install an age verification feature and let European users block their messages to train AI models.
