Amaarae’s voice is, really, a couple of distinct voices. Most notable is a squeaky treble that has become her calling card. On ‘Fountain Baby,’ her critically-acclaimed 2023 album, she juxtaposes its childlike innocence with strident lyrics on sexuality, money, and individualism. It’s not the only trick that makes Amaarae stand apart from conventional R&B hip-hop, however. The album reveals her as a fearless creator and inhabitor of experimental sonic worlds. For instance, the viral “Angels In Tibet” grabs thrumming African percussion and mashes it with gurgling bass synths. Producers have taken a liking to remixing the unique track, including Kaytranada. Elsewhere on the album she invokes a customary mid-register vocal attenuation; it brings a lush and hushed vibe to “Reckless & Sweet.” Our cameras revealed yet another angle to Amaarae’s dynamic delivery skills when “Princess Going Digital” was presented for our stage. Almost like an emcee, she wields the mic, mugs the lens, and spits out staccato lines. In the chaos of its frenetic movements, she grabs the wheel and takes steady control.
