When Serena Williams announced she would give up tennis after this year's US Open, she set off on an impromptu farewell tour that broke attendance records.
Throughout the day, 71,332 fans entered the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, according to data USTA provided to Front Office Sports. That's the second-highest daily attendance in US Open history - an even more impressive feat for a series of first-round matches.

However, that is not the only step.
Monday's US Open night session, which featured Williams at prime time, set a record for the most night session attendance of any game in history, with 29,402 fans. The crowd was clearly drawn to Williams, as the majority of fans left before or during the ensuing game against male star Nick Kyrgios.
The daytime session set a record on Opening Day, with 41,920 fans.
Williams will likely play her final singles match on Wednesday night against Anett Kontaveit - who is currently ranked second in the world.
